Discount selling is a broader term that describes the overall strategy or practice of reducing prices to increase sales volume. A business employing discount selling might slash prices on several items weeknights.

It’s important to differentiate between types of sales. A clearance sale typically involves items that are damaged, overstocked, or no longer wanted by the seller. The goal is often to get rid of these quickly. However, the term clearance sale can sometimes be used loosely for any big discount event.

On the other hand, a standard discount sale usually aims to move general inventory by offering reduced prices on specific, but still-saleable, goods. Think of it as the go-to promotion for everyday items needing to shift faster. Another common phrase involving discounts is promotion or offer, which often imply a specific campaign designed to boost sales at certain times.

Large-scale sales events also have distinct English names. While many countries participate in "Black Friday," an annual shopping event celebrated the day after Thanksgiving in the US, other regions have their own specific names which are commonly used.

The precise amount discounted is often expressed using terms like one-third off (meaning the new price is two-thirds of the original, also called a 33.33% discount), 15% off (applying a percentage reduction), or $20 off (reducing the price by a fixed dollar amount). You might even hear on special or special buy indicating a particular item is currently at a reduced price.

Knowing these terms helps shoppers navigate the world of retail and shopping periods.
